Fence Colliery Reclamation, Rotherham

The task here was to remove all the concrete in the colliery area, crush and stockpile for further use.

We were also tasked with reclaiming 2 coal seams which were present in this area, to a depth of 29 metres, and cap the main shaft at depth to avoid any sterilised area at the surface. Recompaction was to be to NHBC standards and would be validated by others on behalf of the Client.

There had been a foundry in part of the site and we were required to regenerate this area, removing 200 concrete piles and crush for reuse on site.

High Standards of Compaction

The 2 coal seams present covered approximately 80% of the site area, and the expected recovery was in the region of 40,000 tonnes – which we slightly exceeded.

The work was carried out over a period of 7 months and the Consultant on site complemented us on our standard of compaction (Bearing in mind we compacted in 250mm layers from 29 metres depth to OGL without one failure).

The consultants comments were, “that the initial results, based on a 25 year prediction, were bettered by 2/3rds of the original prediction”.
